Volvo Surveys U.S. Drivers on Autonomous Cars, Gets Mixed Results

Autonomous driving—love it or hate it, it’s very likely just around the proverbial corner from us, and with that fact looming on the horizon, Volvo Cars recently conducted an enormous online survey to gauge opinions about the varying attitudes toward autonomous driving. You may or may not be surprised to learn that our home state of California was among the most ready for the arrival of autonomous driving, but some of the other states weren’t so keen.

While Californians and New Yorkers were almost unanimous in their support for autonomous vehicles, drivers from Illinois and Texas were less excited. Only 52 percent of Illinoisans said they would trust an autonomous vehicle to make safety related decisions, while only 60 perfect of Texans felt autonomous vehicles could keep their family safer, 9 percentage points lower than the national average.

Where did American’s agree most? The overwhelming majority—90 percent of respondents—agree that governments and local authorities are reacting too slowly to appropriately plan for and implement autonomous driving.

“The difference between states regarding the safety benefits of autonomous cars highlights why we need a federal framework for autonomous driving regulations. Volvo believes that autonomous driving vehicles should give you the freedom to choose when you want to drive and when you want to delegate driving to the car. The Future of Driving survey confirmed that consumers seek this freedom as autonomous driving technologies are introduced.” —Lex Kerssemakers, President and CEO of Volvo Car USA

Following this Future of Driving survey discussed above, Volvo intends to field an autonomous driving pilot program called “Drive Me” that will put 100 customers in autonomous vehicles by 2017. Until then, however, here at Volvo Cars Marin, we’ll still be the best place for Corte Madera, CA drivers to find the reliable and luxurious Volvo lineup. So, while you’re still the one driving you’re vehicle, make sure it’s a pleasure to do so, make sure it’s a Volvo.
