There are four main types of differentials used for vehicle function to eliminate wheel dragging and slipping. These differentials are designed to protect your wheels and axels. The four main types of differentials include:

 

Open Differential

The outside wheel will move faster than the inside wheel in open differential. This is the most basic type, and torque will still be provided to the wheels if traction is lost.

 

Limited Slip Differential

When you have heavy acceleration occurring or a tight turn, normal torque will go to the tire that is slipping to provide more ample traction.
